Many years ago, when I was a newly minted manager at the David Sarnoff Research Center, I asked my Director for advice on how to manage my team. I had already taken several courses on this subject, but he gave me a piece of wisdom that I hadn’t heard before.
Back when I served in the military there was a large section in the leadership training I went through which covered behavioral and motivational factors and how they are affected by (open and hidden) fears, beliefs, desires and perspectives, and how understanding another person’s factors can be used to achieve a (usually military) goal. This stuck with me and I since then I always try to get a deeper understanding of what drives the people around me, which has been highly beneficial in many situations.

I love that the military trained the leadership this way.
